Pub-reach: Introducing a key soccer metric

The number of championships, league points, profit, and famous players are not the only ways to measure a football team. How about measuring how much a team’s fans care about the team, how loyal the fans are, and how loud they are at games?

Introducing here the concept of “pub-reach“, how many local pubs support a team, as one alternative measure of a team’s swagger, and a sure source of bragging rights for some clubs.

Our first look is of rivals LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS.  The Galaxy and Earthquakes play at 7:30 PT on Saturdayay.  There is a good preview of this match at ASN.

The list below shows the official Galaxy and Quakes team pubs per MLS.  Amazingly these two rivals are on parity here, with 16 pubs each, though Quakes fans may note that the Galaxy pubs are presumably shared with Chivas.

MLS parity – down to the pub level.

I have to agree with Jon. The Brit would be top of my list.

So why are they not on the official MLS pub list for San Jose? Were they a threat to pub-parity? Can an exception be made if we petition for The Brit to be the Quakes’ Designated Pub’er?

Im sorry but your top pubs for the Earthquakes is quite wrong. The fact that you are missing The Brit would be unheard of in San Jose.

It really begs some questions, doesn’t it? Did they (Cock n Bull in Santa Monica and the Brit in in Cupertino) receive two cautions and get ejected? Were they cut from the team – for that matter, are MLS teams limited to a 16-pub roster? Did they want to keep the venue small and intimate, at the expense of gate receipts?

Perhaps a MLS-pub franchise costs millions and that limits their numbers… ;)

I dunno. The Cock n Bull in Santa Monica and the Brit in in Cupertino (I think–it’s been a few years) aren’t available? Is it injury or are they suspended.
