European Goal Spree in World Cup Qualifying

Numerologists will tell you that the date 9-9-09 is special.  Sounds a bit far fetched, but maybe strikers believe it.

There was a veritable goal spree in World Cup qualifying matches in Europe today, with two countries racking up 7-0 victories.  Here are a few fun facts from today’s Europe matches:

  • 72 goals were scored in 25 matches
  • 48 goals were scored by the home teams
  • 24 goals were scored by the away teams

England, Spain, and Netherlands have now each qualified for the World Cup with eight straight wins.

At this point in qualifying many countries will not make it into the World Cup even if they win their remaining games. The home match in front of their supporters may be the sweetest taste of glory left for them until the next World Cup cycles starts.

Full results are posted on ESPN
